On March 29th 2026, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island (CCALI) from 1:30-5:00 PM. Volunteers worked as teaching assistants, providing aid to both students and teachers throughout class.
To start the day, we greeted students as they came to class; helping them unpack their things in an organized manner. Before class officially started, TAs’ printed activity sheets, took students to the bathroom, and collected homework. Throughout the day class continued smoothly as TAs’ collected work to be graded by the teacher. Towards the later half of classes, students were given small coloring and activity sheets where TA’s helped clean up and distribute work, significantly relieving the teachers’ work loads. Later in the day, students engaged in their respective culture classes where TAs guided students to their designated course, allowing a smooth transition from class to class. Finally, TAs helped make the pick-up process easier by helping students pack up their belongings and ensuring they are brought to the correct parent or guardian.
Conclusively, taking on the role of a TA allowed volunteers to gain valuable experience working with kids in a learning environment. This gave us insight into the daily lives of teachers, strengthening our patience and compassion for young children.
