This is the 218th event held by AYLUS Oakland Gardens on Saturday March 28 2026. During the event we had 46 volunteers come to assist us during the event from 9:45 to 1:15. The goal of the event was to partner with Maureen Regan to maintain and keep preserving the Lewis Latimer House. The start of the event was slightly delayed because we were waiting on one of the Lewis Latimer House gardeners to open the gate for us. During the event Maureen, her husband Frank, the gardener Jacqueline, and Ada, assisted us with maintaining the Lewis Latimer House.
At the start of the event while waiting for the gate to the House to open, we assigned a few volunteers to go around the entire block, which includes the Lewis Latimer House, and tennis courts behind the house, to pick up trash. Even though this was outside the activity area we knew it was our duty to do our jobs beyond what is expected. Eventually when the gates to the house were opened we gathered in the small parking area to hand out tools and equipment. There were two major items to complete,first mulching and pruning the garden behind the house; second clearing the front yard from leaves and debris. We divided into two teams to handle each task, team one with 15 volunteers used pitchforks, rakes, and two wheel barrows to distribute the mulch across the garden beds. The second team with five people cleared the front yard with rakes and collected all the debris in trash bags. Near the end of the event Maureen and Frank distributed chips, other snacks, and water to our teams. By the end of the event we collected 20 bags of garbage and yard litter. We also completely distributed a 5 foot pile of mulch.
