This is the 78th event held by AYLUS Oakland Gardens. On Friday, June 28, 2024, AYLUS Oakland Gardens went to our community garden to water and weed the plants. The day was nice, as the sun was not that bright and the temperature was not that high. Our members enjoyed this nice weather.
These plants were grown by the kids of the community. This garden is in front of an elementary school. The school and the community work together to grow this garden. However, because school ended, they couldn’t continue growing these plants. Because of this, the teachers wished for volunteers help keep the plants alive during summer break. Some of these plants are eggplants, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, and more. Our members started off the event by weeding the flowerbeds. There was a lot of grass growing so we had to pluck these out by the roots. It took us quite a while, as there were many flowerbeds, but we managed to do it. There were a lot of weeds that we pulled out.
After that, we had to water the plants. We used buckets we brought from our own households and filled those up with water from the hoses. As we were filling those up, our president set a hose to shower and used it to water the plants directly. This was proven to be effective, as the shower setting can cover a large area. Our members were careful to give enough water that they won’t dehydrate or drown from the water.
This event was very fun and exciting. We get to help these plants grow to full maturity. When they are done growing, their seeds can be used to grow more plants. If they also grow to full maturity, we can eventually grow plants from this one family line for a really long time.
