AYLUS Manhasset volunteered at Jones Beach, 3/9/24 for plant management

Members from AYLUS Manhasset branch helped at the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center’s restoration project aimed to help native “goldenrod” plants outcompete invasive species. From 9:30AM to 12:00PM various volunteers from all sorts of different groups were involved in helping to clean up the dead stems from last year.

This area was previously a parking lot for Jones Beach, but as demand shifted elsewhere and it was less used it was torn down to create a new wildlife area and a nature center. However, they are dealing with a variety of invasive species here at Jones Beach.

The groups utilized various tools such as shears and other cutting devices to help trim down the old goldenrod stems so that the sprouts could get more sunlight. Because goldenrod sprouts quite early in March, this can help them grow faster than their competitors. In the end, we had gathered many bags of goldenrod plant stems and helped to cut away some invasive species.

Matthew Yang and Eva Westbay participated for 2.5 hours.
