On October 22nd, 2023 several members of the Frisco & Plano AYLUS branch hosted a self-defense lesson using taekwondo with special guests Akshat Khiste and Avani Khiste(red belts of taekwondo at Tiger Sun Martial Arts) at the GEM Multicultural center. The primary objective of the event was to provide children with basic self-defense skills and knowledge as well as introduce a form of martial arts so they can learn to protect themselves or find a new interest. Many hours were spent to design the lesson plan and prepare teaching materials for this particular lesson, and throughout teaching, we realized how important it was to be able to catch the children’s attention to make an effective lesson. Regular lessons teaching basic moves did not appeal to children, so in our lesson plan we needed to set it up to teach but also allow the kids to enjoy the lesson with some games. It was even more challenging due to the large number of students we were given, meaning we needed to monitor and make sure no one got hurt. In conclusion, the event was a great learning experience for the volunteers and the students, and we are grateful to our special guests for helping us design the lesson plan.
