In November, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) students continued their Education Help Program. Although schools are restarting, some middle school students are still looking for tutoring classes to improve their academic skills in classes like math, science, writing or reading. Because of this, GPA is holding tutoring opportunities in core subjects.
GPA member Catherine Feng tutored a student in reading from 3:00 – 6:00 pm on Monday (11/22). We worked on fractions, starting with order of operations before moving onto word problems involving different operations with fractions. More GPA members tutored their students in person or online.
Catherine tutored her student in math on Monday (11/29) from 3:00 – 6:00 pm: This week, we focused on fractions, working on multi-step problems using concepts from order of operations. We also reviewed tricks when multiplying fractions, such as reducing the fractions to their most basic form before performing multiplication. I tutored another two students in reading from 2:15 – 3:45 pm on Sunday (11/28). The students read a book about different activities, as well as one about a greedy tiger. We went over the pronunciation and meaning of the words they read before discussing the content of the books. I tutored another student in math from 4:00 – 6:00 pm on Sunday (11/28). We reviewed basic arithmetic operations, including addition and multiplication. After reviewing concepts like carrying digits over and how to line digits up to perform addition, we performed multiplication problems and practiced how to approach more complex problems (splitting them up into parts and remembering to multiply each digit of the numbers).
The program allows GPA members to provide reading, writing, speaking, communication, and more to their students across the country.
