On July 10, 2018, students from the San Diego Branch of AYLUS organized and participated in a volunteering event at the Jacob and Cushman San Diego Food Bank to help package food to be distributed to the needy. The Jacob and Cushman San Diego Food Bank and the North County Food Bank chapter comprise the largest hunger-relief organization in San Diego County. Last year, the Food Bank distributed 26 million pounds of food, and the Food Bank serves, on average, 370,000 people per month in San Diego County. According to the Food Bank, about 80% of the work done in their warehouses comes from volunteer service. Without them, the Food Bank could not hope to accomplish what it has done these past few years.
The students spent 3 hours working diligently on the following tasks:
- Checking pears, apples, and potatoes for any rotten ones and disposing as necessary
- Bagging the pears, apples, and potatoes for distribution
Although bagging these foods and checking them sounds like a simple task, the group of 7 students were able to bag a whopping 3,000 pounds of food. Over the span of three hours fatigue took its toll on the boys, but they still remained steadfast in their task and completed this suprisingly arduous task. We are very proud of what these students accomplished and are excited to do more work in the future.
