AYLUS Pearland Junior Members Initiated Online Tutoring Fundraising Program

In mid-July 2020, three AYLUS Pearland junior members, Aila Jiang, Kara Li and Derek Zhu initiated an online English reading tutoring fundraising program. This program teaches elementary school students reading and vocabulary every week in exchange for a small token that will be used for future AYLUS projects to help kids from low-income families or underserved communities.

At the beginning, the volunteers practiced teaching with 2 kids who participated in AYLUS Pearland’s “Hello Wuhan” program for free. In mid-August they officially launched this fundraising project, and the first group of students were a few K-1 kids attending local elementary schools and several international school students in China. The volunteers use online programs such as BrainPop, Reading A to Z and Time for Kids as teaching resources. The students enjoyed learning these interactive and animated online materials so more and more kids joined the class. By the end of 2020, the volunteers have taught 78 classes to about 15 students and have raised about $480 for AYLUS. Recently a couple of more junior members were recruited and trained to meet the increasing demand. In mid-April, the programs increased to offer 3 classes per week. The total fund raised to date is about $900.
