East Cobb Young Musicians Summer Performance VII

On July 13, 2018, we, six members from the East Cobb Young Musicians performed a total of TWO hours at two local senior centers (East Cobb Senior Center and Arbor Terrace). There were several different kinds of instruments including the trumpet, violin, clarinet, and piano. The performers played both contemporary pieces and classical pieces.

As the musicians arrived, we were greeted by the friendly staff and guided to the area in which we unpacked and prepared to perform. When everyone had arrived, we went out to the audience and had a brief self-introduction. It was the first time we had gone to the East Cobb Senior Center, so we had a longer self-introduction. A student amongst the group gave an opening statement, and then the performances began. There were many different types of performances such as solos, duets, and quartets, all played on different instruments.

At the East Cobb Senior Center, although the musicians had scheduled a performance, our performance time collided with another group that usually performs on Friday afternoon. The other group was very kind and agreed to give one hour of their total three hours of performance time. Some of their group sat in the audience and listened to the performance, while others in their group stayed at their chairs and listened. The performance area was large and spacious and gave us lots of space to perform in. The performances pleased the audience and received applause and even some laughter.

At Arbor Terrace, the musicians performed at two locations in the building. As some people performed at Big Room, the others would either wait for their performance or perform at the Small Room. Unfortunately, the Small Room does not have a piano, so we had to skip it at Small Room. The seniors and the staff love listening to the perform and applauded after every performance. Finally, we get together to celebrate birthday by playing and singing “Happy Birthday” to Sheila Amster, a silver hair grandma.

The seniors enjoy watching and listening to the musicians perform, and the musicians enjoy performing for the seniors too. The performances give the seniors some company and entertainment. The opportunity to perform at the senior centers also gives us the chance to show our musical talent.

Attendance: Selina Huang (2 hours), Susanna Huang (2 hours), Maxwell Jiang (2 hours), Jay Pan (2 hours), Katherine Sha (2 hours), Cynthia Ruan (2 hours).
