San Diego Students Worked on Second Lagoon Nature Project on June 23, 2017

On June 23, the San Diego students of AYLUS worked on the 2nd Lagoon Nature Project, with

staff from the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy (SDVRC). The site used to be the runway of the Del Mar airport. In 1941, after Pearl Harbor, the US Navy re-acquired this airport to use as a base for two lighter- than-air dirigibles. The blimps refueled at Del Mar and then continued anti-submarine patrols up and down the coast up to 100 miles offshore.

The site went unused in 1968 and became an site for conservation in the 1970s. At first, birds won’t build their nest in the site since there were no good surface earth. Through the hard work of the local community, now birds and animals have used the site as their habitat. There are fish in the wetlands.

The San Diego students of AYLUS worked for hours clearing and maintaining the trail path, helping the lagoon restoring its habitat.

Two park rangers gave a the students a tour of the lagoon at the end the project.

The student who participated in the 2nd Nature Project are: Anthony Jiang, Claire Jiang, Raymond Li, Richard Wu, Lynne Xu, Amanda Zhang, Andrew Zhang, and Zoe Zhang.
