In June, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) students continued their Reading & Writing Help Program. As school ends and summer break starts, some middle school students are looking for tutoring classes to improve their academic skills in classes like math, science, or reading. Because of this, GPA is holding tutoring opportunities in core subjects. The program allows GPA members to provide reading, writing, speaking, communication, and more to their students across the country.
Alissa Wu (6/21, 1.5 hours) is tutoring 2nd graders each week in language arts by reading stories. For these classes, she finds a short story that is suitable for 2nd graders, adds pictures to help students understand what’s going on, thinks of discussion questions to answer after students finish reading, and defines any words students don’t know during the meeting. This week, 11 students read a story called “Alex and Amanda’s First Concert.” They took turns reading the paragraphs. For words they didn’t understand, Alissa defined them, and they would brainstorm synonyms in the chat. For homework, the students made some sentences with the words they just learned and wrote a few sentences about a time when they tried to convince their parents to do something.
