On October 11th, 2020, the East Cobb Branch went to laser cut plastic for use in shield masks at Atlanta Beat COVID (ABC) from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Our current 3D printing output for shield mask frames has gone so high that we currently produce more frames than there are films. In order to remedy this, we laser cut films out of large sheets. The plastic is originally rolled up and too wide to put into the laser cutter. Therefore, we first cut it to fit in the device. The dimensions permit 6 films to be cut from each sheet but unfortunately, only 4 can be cut at a time. Therefore, our process is to cut the four films we can, but also cut off the remaining plastic. This allows us to save the plastic that can only fit two films for cutting later, meaning we only must do one type of task at a time, increasing our efficiency. Once we have cut enough sheets, we start cutting the ones that can only fit two films.
We cut over 170 films today with help of branch adviser and parent, plan to cut more in the future.
