AYLUS Roslyn helps at AHRC Walk (4th) on October 25th

On Sunday, October 25th, 2026 from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm, 5 AYLUS volunteers from the Roslyn branch attended the annual AHRC walk at Eisenhower Park. As volunteers, our job was to manage the face painting booth, where face paint, stencils, and temporary tattoos were offered.

When we first arrived, we put on T-shirts that indicated we were volunteers. Then, we grabbed the box labeled “face painting and tattoos” and carried it towards our assigned table. We opened the box and found all the face painting supplies inside. We took out the supplies and set them on top of the 3 picnic tables covered in tablecloths. The supplies consisted of temporary tattoos, water, brushes, stencils, face paint, glitter, glue, sponges, an inspiration binder, and a book of glitter tattoo stickers. Even though none of us had much experience with face painting or tattoos, we still were determined to learn and bring smiles to peoples’ faces. We separated everyone into different jobs, temporary tattoos, face painting, and glitter tattoos. We started trying and learning how to make these designs through trial and error, and eventually understood the process in which we would make them. Food like muffins, water, apples, and oranges, and water were also kindly offered to everyone during the walk.

The walk began at around 10:30. As people came and walked toward our table, we would ask them if they would like a temporary tattoo, a glitter tattoo, or have their face painted. If they asked for their face to be painted, we would direct them to the section in the tables where people were getting their faces painted. The people painting faces would ask the person which design front the inspiration binder they would like. Then, they would hydrate the colors they wanted to use with water and begin their design. If the person wanted a temporary tattoo, the person doing temporary tattoos would ask which tattoo the person wanted, peel the layer of plastic off, lightly wet the tattoo with a separate bowl of water, press it onto the person’s skin, and peel it off to reveal an amazing design. If the person wanted a glitter tattoo, they would be directed to the people creating glitter tattoos. They would ask the person which tattoo shape from the glitter tattoo sticker binder they would like. They would peel off the desired shape and place it on their skin. After adding some glue on top, the volunteer would sprinkle the color that the person wanted. After peeling back the sticker, and letting it dry for a bit, the person would be left with a sparkly design on their skin. No matter the design, the person getting it would always express their thanks, leaving with a smile on their face.

This event gave us a chance to try something new and improve. As we watched the guests leave happily, we realized that even though it was small, we had made a change, and that the guests’ happy reactions made all our effort worthwhile. As a branch, we reflected on this experience and realized that helping out with even small things can make someone’s day much brighter.
