AYLUS Great Neck Branch Volunteer at State Park 10/31/2026 (89th)

Aylus Great Neck Branch Volunteer in Bayard Cutting Arboretum on 10/31/2026 (89th)

On 10/31/2026, Aylus volunteers went to Heckscher State Park from 9:30am to 12:30am (3 hours).

All the volunteers had different tasks to do. One group of volunteers were removing mugworts and phragmites by either pulling or cutting with a sickle. The other group focused on cutting the black locust trees with cutters. They wore helmets and goggles for protection because some black locust trees can be very high and they also have spikes on them. Removing a black locust isn’t as easy as one may think. First they cut off the excessive branches to prevent getting hurt by the thorns. After that, the branches are removed and piled up. Then the trunk part is cut off. Eventually, all of the black locusts cut off are moved onto a truck. The state park is very beautiful, and the weather was very nice. The job we did today was very satisfying and set a great mood for Halloween.
