Day 4 of the CRAB summer camp occurred on August 27. The overarching topic of day 4 was genetics. Teacher Isabelle Yang started by reviewing the structure of DNA. Then Teacher Zoe Li covered DNA replication, transcription, and mRNA modification, Isabelle covered translation, and Zoe taught about mutations. Isabelle proceeded to teach important genetics vocabulary and mendelian and nonmendalian genetics. Zoe finished the lecture notes with solving genetics problems using punnett squares and math. In our CRAB interest form that was sent to invite students to our biology camp, many students reported that they were interested in genetics.
This genetics lecture had 13 attendees with seven actively participating students (Chloe, Ethan, Faye, Julie, Melody, Phoebe, Tammy). At the end of the lecture, Six students played the live Wayground game.
The genetics slideshow contained 96 slides. The lecture content ended a few minutes overtime, and the Wayground game concluded the meeting. Due to the fact that genetics problems took a long time to explain well, the meeting ended after 2 hours 10 minutes. A few students stayed for the entire meeting.
In the anonymous feedback form, 100% of responders reported that they thought the lecture content was covered at a good pace, the teachers’ voices were clear, they could answer most of the questions with just the right enough time being given, and the right amount of information was on the slides. Half of the responders said some of the lecture information was helpful and the other said the entire lecture was helpful.
This lecture was successful as students understood the processes involved in DNA replication, transcription, and translation as well as mendelian and non-mendelian genetics. Solving inheritance problems was tricky, but after many practice problems, students felt more comfortable figuring out these problems.
