On Saturday, July 13th, members of AYLUS Syosset visited the cerebral palsy center located in Farmingdale. As cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder that impacts the verbal and mobile abilities of the residents, many had their own ways of communication—it was up to the volunteers to be accommodating for the duration of the experience.
Simple activities, whether it was making bracelets, coloring, or other crafts can truly change the entire setting for the residents. In addition, for the residents that are able to verbally share their thoughts, just simply engaging in conversation for an hour or two can make them feel seen. After finishing up with arts and crafts, Syosset volunteers always make baked goods for the residents—it’s a simple way for the residents to get hands-on experience with the food that they consume.
