On Saturday May 23, 2026, AYLUS of Oakland Gardens held its 227th event in the Browne Playground outside P.S. 020 from 8:45am to 12:15pm. The event’s objective was to continue to beautify and maintain the playground and flower beds. During the event we worked with Partnership for Parks (PFP) and Maureen and her husband Frank to plant new flowers and clean up the park. During the event we worked with Partnership for Park members Alejandra Vaneger, Patrica Perons, JC Peeples, and Cory Shair. We also collaborated with park employees Ada, Naranjo Elias, Rosa Rosario, and Tien-Shura Lee.
At the start of the event we received Tshirts, enough for every volunteer, from PFP to wear during the event. We started by separating our volunteers into groups based on age. We were divided into four groups which were handed these tasks: group planters, planted the new Buddleia flower bushes behind the bathroom in the left most (facing the swings) plant bed. The next group, the weeding group, was spread out over the middle and right most plant beds. The next group, the trash picking group, was also spread out over the middle and right most plant beds. The last group, the landscaping group, stayed mainly in the area around the large willow tree on the left. To complete this we were provided two wheelbarrows, fifteen shovels, fifteen rakes, twenty trash pickers, and ten loppers. The planting groups used the shovels to dig about a one and a half foot deep hole to properly seat the plants inside. The weeding group used the rakes to loosen the soil and the shovels for more stubborn weeds. The trash picking group works next to the weed picking group to not only pick up trash but also to remove pulled and dug up weeds and place them into trash bags. The landscaping group cleaned up and redistributed mulch around the willow tree and assisted in the cutting of harder weeds with loppers. As the event went along we were pressing to finish faster due to the forecasted rain by the end of the event. Nearing the end of the event Maureen and Frank generously provided us with a snack break as there was a small down pour before the end. During the break we distributed Strawberry muffins, Strawberry donuts, Strawberry short cake, a basket of apples, water and chocolate milk. At the end of the event we collected 65 bags of trash and weeds. We cleaned up all our tools and took a group picture in front of the playground.
