AYLUS Oakland Gardens Beautifies Lawrence Triangle and Honors Hospital Workers for Mother’s Day (5/9/2026)

On May 9th, 2026, AYLUS Oakland Gardens held its 225th community service event at Lawrence Triangle, a small park located across from Flushing Hospital Medical Center. During this event, we once again partnered with Maureen Reagan to beautify the area surrounding the hospital and prepare Mother’s Day flower pots for hospital workers. We had done a similar task in previous years, as this event has become a tradition for our branch. The event lasted from 8:45 AM to 12:15 PM, and around 40 members attended this event.

At the beginning of the event, all members gathered together at Lawrence Triangle to receive the tools and instructions needed to clean up the Triangle. We equipped our members with rakes, cutters, and hoes before splitting into different groups. Members with cutters followed Maureen Reagan throughout the park to trim bushes and overgrown branches within the grassy areas of the triangle. Others used hoes to remove weeds around the tree gardens surrounding the park, or used rakes to clean and level the soil. Throughout the process, we also spread wood chips around the tree beds, removed excess weeds, and ensured the sidewalks remained clean and presentable for pedestrians in the area.

At around 10:30 AM, our members returned all the tools to begin the next portion of the event: creating flower pots for hospital workers in honor of Mother’s Day. Our members brought out tables, chairs, water containers, plastic trays, sponges, and flowers from the truck before setting up the flower pot station. Maureen also distributed hand wipes before the activity began since our members had just worked with soil and plants prior.

Maureen demonstrated the process of assembling the flower pots and explained how to create visually balanced arrangements. Our members first poured water into plastic trays to soak the floral sponges. Afterward, Maureen carefully cut individual flowers from the bouquets and distributed flowers along each member with a flower pot. We then inserted the flowers into the wet sponges one by one, making sure to cover the visible portions of the sponge completely while arranging the flowers neatly from every angle. After everyone completed their flower pots, we proudly admired one another’s creations in this activity.

Once all the flower pots were completed, our members carefully carried the arrangements across the street to Flushing Hospital Medical Center to deliver them to the hospital workers. Members waited patiently for clearance before being guided by a hospital staff member to the second floor of the hospital building. There, members placed all the flower pots onto a table where hospital workers would later collect them during their shifts. After completing the delivery, members returned to Lawrence Triangle to conclude the event.

Through this event, AYLUS Oakland Gardens successfully beautified the Lawrence Triangle area once again while also showing appreciation for the hardworking hospital staff at Flushing Hospital Medical Center during Mother’s Day weekend. This event has become a meaningful tradition for our branch, and we hope to continue returning each year to preserve the environment surrounding the hospital.

We would like to extend our thanks to Maureen Reagan for organizing this event and for continuing to work with our branch throughout the years. We would also like to thank the staff members at Flushing Hospital Medical Center for welcoming our members and helping coordinate the flower pot delivery. In addition, we are grateful to our parent advisor team for their continued support throughout the event. Finally, we would like to thank all AYLUS Oakland Gardens members who attended this event. Through your hard work and dedication, our branch was able to beautify the community and spread appreciation to hospital workers during Mother’s Day weekend.
