On May 2nd, 2026, AYLUS Oakland Gardens had their 224th event from 8:45am to 12:15pm. John Weir was the one helping our team for today’s event. The AYLUS Oakland Gardens did plant removal today and picked up trash along the pond in John Golden Pond.
Our board members made two groups. One group picked up trash around the whole pond and the other group removed plants around the pond like mugwort, garlic mustard, which has a small white flower on the top, porcelain berry, which is redder and whiter than other plants and looks like a vine. John taught us about the difference between poison ivy and english ivy. Poison ivy can irritate your skin and has three leaves. English ivy is very different. It was brought from another country unlike poison ivy. It can grow super quickly and is usually seen on buildings. Then there were a couple people pulled out of the plant removal group to do shoveling. The members were shoveling sand from a past hurricane about two years ago that caused the sand to get on the walkway. There are houses next to the pond and the small hill causes the water to rush down the hill and cause the sand to get washed up. Our members shoveled all the sand up and put it in buckets and carried them to an open area and dumped the sand there.
At the end of the event, John provided us with granola bars and water and our members thanked him for the amazing treat after our hard work. We thank all our members for today’s hard work and hope to see all members next week!
