On April 4th, from 3:45 to 5:00, the AYLUS Great Neck Branch volunteers held an AAPI event at the Main library, providing storytelling and arts and crafts activities. The event started off with volunteers reading books to children, detailing Asian culture. Ryder started off by reading “The Not-Quite-Perfect Passover”, followed by Andrew reading “A Sweet New Year for Ren” and then Nathan reading traditional tales from the comprehensive book “Moonbeams Dumplings Dragon Boats”. Throughout this read-a-loud, volunteers were able to engage with the children through interactive questions. Participants were able to learn about traditional Chinese cultures and get to know their zodiacs. After the reading session, participants were able to engage in a variety of arts and crafts activities, including making baby chicks for easter with Jolynn and Rider, making origami stars and dragons with Jaden, Andrew, Jiangyuan and Rebecca, and creating animals out of paper plates with Nathan. Victoria also taught participants the basics of crochet, including the chain stitch. Overall, this event was both informative and fun. We thank everyone for coming and hope to see them next time!
