On Sunday, November 23, 2025, AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch held its 206th event at Kingsland Homestead in Flushing. For this event, we worked with Maureen Regan and Green Earth Urban Gardens from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm to mulch the flowerbeds and trim the trees.
We first created groups to figure out who would be mulching or trimming the trees. There were two mulching groups, one was working near the Kingsland Homestead, and the other group was working on mulching the flower bed in the park right next to the Homestead. Once the rakes, loppers, and shovels were given out, we realized there weren’t enough wheelbarrows to go around. So AYLUS Oakland Garden members had to be creative. Our members work together to come up with ideas to carry the mulch from place to place without leaving a mess. Soon, our members realized that they could put the mulch in trash bags to make it easier to carry. They communicated with each other to make sure the trash bags weren’t too heavy and worked together to carry the bags of mulch to the flowerbed in the park. Volunteering isn’t just about improving the community; it’s also about solving problems in a real-life situation. Volunteering helps our members apply their problem-solving skills in s real setting.
While one group was mulching, there was another group cutting the trees and vines near the Kingsland Homestead. Members used loppers and hand saws to trim the trees and rose bushes. Members worked together to get the cut branches and rose bushes into a truck. This truck carries all of the cut branches after our work is over. The AYLUS Oakland Garden members also communicate with passersby to be careful when they walk past the truck, because there are rose bushes with thorns, and our members don’t want them to get hurt.
Our members also ended up raking some leaves near the Homestead, and we ended up filling up about 65 bags with leaves.
Lastly, we want to thank Maureen Regan for offering us food during the event. Also, it was our last time working with Maureen Regan for the year 2025. We also want to thank Senator John Liu for sponsoring the giving out of free compost bins to passerbys and parkgoers. Thank you to all the volunteers for coming to the event.
