On Sunday, November 16th, AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch held its 205th event at Kissena Park. During the event, we collaborated with Roxanna, Ada, and Matias from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm to rake leaves and get rid of plants and branches.
We started the event by grabbing the tools. There were rakes, loppers, leaf scoopers, and trash bags all inside the office where the tools were stored. After that, the people with rakes, leaf scoopers, and trash bags all walked to the playground nearby, while the people with loppers went with Ada and Matias. Upon entering the playground, we found that the entire place was covered with leaves. The rakers raked all the leaves up into multiple big piles, and the leaf scoopers scooped the piles of leaves inside the trash bags. Meanwhile, Ada and Matias taught the lopper group what to cut and remove, with Matias guiding them for any problems. The lopper group threw the cut branches and plants outside of the fence, where people picked them up and stored them in a truck. Some of our members went into the truck, compressing and flattening the branches to make room for more to be thrown in. Our members had to be careful due to the number of thorns that were on many of the plants.
Later on, the raker group finished raking all the leaves inside of the playground, so they then focused on the exterior. Again, there were heavy amounts of leaves, so our members quickly began working. After the lopper group was finished with their work, they contributed by joining the raking group, holding trash or paper bags, and scooping the leaves in. After we finished raking around the exterior of the park, we all gathered together near the playground to rake more leaves.
In this event, our branch filled over 120 bags of leaves, and a truck load of branches and plants. The environment around the park was considerably better, and we would like to thank Roxanna for this opportunity to improve and better our community.
