AYLUS Oakland Gardens Members Beautify Kissena Park (11/01/2025)

On Saturday, November 1st, 2025, the AYLUS Oakland Gardens branch went to Kissena Park to beautify it as their 203rd event. They arrived at 9:00 am and left at 12:00 pm. AYLUS Oakland Gardens worked with Roxanna once more to help them achieve this goal.

Our members started off this event by gathering tools. They went to the office to grab bags, leaf scoops, rakes, brooms, and clippers. Once all of our members had these tools, they traveled to a different part of the park to beautify it. First, our members used rakes and leaf scoops to remove leaves. These leaves are a hazard, as they could potentially host future diseases. Furthermore, when it rains or snows, these leaves could become slippery and hurt people. Our members scooped and raked as many leaves as they could to prevent this problem. To clean up, other members used the brooms to push dirt to the sides of the paths.

While our members raked leaves, other members used the clippers to trim the bushes and remove vines. The bushes were getting overgrown, and were spreading into the paths, where pedestrians could walk into them. This could lead to moderate to severe scratches, which would hurt a lot. Meanwhile, the vines were getting everywhere, covering the dirt, trees, and shrubs. Because of this, they had to be removed, as they could strangle the wanted plants. Our members used clippers to cut the vines and then pulled them out. In the end, they looked much better than before.

Once our members finished with this area, they moved to the park, where there was an abundance of leaves. This was a hazard, as more people were in this park than the paths. Once more, our members used the leaf scoopers and rakes to pick up leaves and put them in bags. In addition, some of our members walked around picking up large branches that people could step on. These branches could hit people and injure them.

In the end, the AYLUS Oakland Gardens branch filled up over 60 bags of leaves and vines. They left the park looking much better and much safer than when they arrived. We would like to thank Roxanna for providing us with this wonderful opportunity to help our community.
