In the week of July 7th to July 11th, members of the AYLUS Houston branch partnered with the Light and Salt Association to assist with classes of kids with special needs, from teaching grammar to origami. During the classes, volunteers helped the class with completing craft activities, worksheets, and even participated in a puppet show. With the help of the volunteers, the day was able to go smoother, and allowed for the teachers to create more activities for the kids.
At the start of the day, the volunteers and kids participated in light exercise, where they did body percussion with the goal of eventually performing a song. After, the activities varied, with one of the days being performing an act of Robin Hood, the play. The parts were split up, and volunteers read through and performed the play alongside the kids, and assisted in reading when needed. Other days included one of the volunteers teaching origami, where teachers were also able to learn how to fold pieces of origami, with the kids having the option of making their own, or helping fold the paper, as well as job presentations. After a lunch break, volunteers helped assist and in some cases, teach grammar. After, classes ended with educational games, like board games, until classes ended and parents came.
Due to the work of the volunteers, the classes were able to occur without problem, and we are extremely thankful for the Light and Salt Association for allowing us to assist throughout the week, and for the opportunity to learn from the experience, as well as allowing for some volunteers to teach as well.
Volunteers (4 hours per day): Stella Zhao, Emma Jia, Junyou Guo, and Daisy Yang (2 Hours per half day).
