On Sunday, June 1st, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at the Chinese Cultural
Association of Long Island’s Chinese school (CCALI) from 1:30PM – 5:00PM. Our job to help in
this Chinese school was to assist as a teacher’s assistant and help the students with different
types of classwork.
As teaching assistants, we played a key role in supporting the teacher and fostering a positive,
engaging classroom environment. Our duties began by creating a warm atmosphere at the start
of class—greeting students, helping them get settled, and checking their homework from the
previous week. During lessons, we managed various logistical tasks such as escorting students
to the bathroom, distributing handouts, and assisting with classwork corrections. This support
allowed the teacher to concentrate on delivering the material without interruptions. We also
handled administrative tasks like making copies and running the school store, where students
could exchange coupons earned through active participation. A major part of our role involved
giving extra help to students who struggled, ensuring they received the support they needed to
keep up. We also explained small activities to enhance the students’ enjoyment and
engagement during lessons. At the end of each session, we helped make dismissal smooth and
cheerful by assisting with packing up and sending the students off on a positive yet excited
attitude about returning. Though these responsibilities might seem minor individually, they were
crucial in allowing the teacher to focus on teaching and in creating a well-organized, joyful
learning space.
Working as teaching assistants gave us meaningful insight into the daily challenges educators
face. Despite the obstacles, the experience was deeply rewarding and helped us build patience
and empathy for young learners. Volunteering in the classroom lets us contribute to a motivating
environment that excited students to return, while also strengthening our own understanding of
effective teaching.
