Syosset AYLUS organization attends Long Island Native Plant Initiative Greenhouse To Help Out.

Written By Felix Zheng

The Syosset AYLUS organization went to the Long Island Native Plant Initiative, where we worked on sifting seeds using special graters and a trash bin to collect the seeds. Some benefits of sifting seeds include Removing debris: Soil often contains rocks, twigs, roots, and other debris that can impede plant growth , Improving soil texture: By sifting soil, you break down clumps and create a more uniform texture , and Promoting seedling success: Fine, sifted soil is perfect for starting seeds. We also helped with zipping up bags filled with soil and debris, which our director Maggie later collected and stored inside the greenhouse inventory for future use. Afterward, we gathered used plants that had been left on their remaining branches. These were stored in a trash can and later brought to the compost, where they were placed. Overall, the Syosset AYLUS organization was very successful in helping out the Long Island Native Plant Initiative by keeping the greenhouse clean and supporting its ultimate goal of collecting as many seeds as possible.
