On Monday, December 23rd, from 9 AM to 1 PM, members of the AYLUS Roslyn branch helped out at the NOSH delivers! Food Pantry. NOSH delivers’ mission is to provide food and essential goods to the community of North Shore.
Members volunteering in the food pantry helped out with anything that was needed to be done. For most of the time, volunteers would restock and organize the shelves for optimal productivity. We aimed to create an environment where anyone coming in would feel like they were shopping in a supermarket and see well organized shelves full of food. When a delivery of produce came in, volunteers helped sort the fruits and vegetables. We would pick out any rotten or spoiled fruit and promptly discard them. We would also portion eggs to appropriate sizes. Finally, at the end of our time volunteering, we set up for an event for young kids to come in and decorate breakfast and lunch bags for children in federally funded lunch programs. The bags would be filled with a meal, either lunch or breakfast, and be decorated with holiday stickers and art. We set up the tables with holiday themed tablecloth and decorative fake candles around the tables.
From our volunteer experience, we gained insight on how a food pantry is run and the effort that goes into it besides the donations. While donations are crucial, they are only the first part of many that goes into running a successful food pantry.
