On 8/31/24, members of AYLUS Syosset collaborated with members AYLUS Great Neck at the Planting Fields Arboretum to remove any remaining traces of invasive ivy, plant new plants, and mulch areas of the Arboretum. Due to the removal of the English Ivy—an invasive species that grows on trees, weakening them and competing for natural resources—the Arboretum was able to plant a variety of new shrubs and trees. AYLUS members of both branches used shovels to dig holes and plant shrubs such as Mahonia, then used wheelbarrows, rakes and shovels to spread mulch over areas of the Arboretum, and finally, removed any final traces of English Ivy. By planting these shrubs, the Arboretum is able to promote biodiversity and native plants, and spreading mulch is important as it suppresses weeds, retain moisture in the soil, and moderate soil temperatures.
