On July 25, 2024, members of the Syosset AYLUS organization participated in a planting activity at the Long Island Initiative of Native Plants (LIINP). This initiative is dedicated to enhancing biodiversity through the promotion of native plant species and the suppression of invasive plants on Long Island. During our visit to the greenhouse, we were assigned various tasks to support the organization’s goals. These tasks included preparing soil by transferring it into separate containers and planting native species within these containers. Some members of our group were responsible for procuring trays for the containers and preparing additional soil for further planting activities. Among the native plants we planted were Grass-leaved Goldenrod (Solidago graminifolia) some characteristics are that this plant is distinguished by its flat-topped flower clusters and narrow leaves. It spreads through rhizomes, forming colonies. The plant typically blooms from early summer to late summer and grows to a height of 1-4 feet. Benefits are that the Grass-leaved Goldenrod is beneficial for wildlife gardens and meadow areas. Additionally, it is used in some medicinal practices for conditions such as asthma and internal bleeding. Another plant that we planted at the greenhouse were the Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) some Characteristics are that the Cardinal Flower is noted for its upright stalks and striking red blooms, which are highly attractive to hummingbirds. It blooms from late spring to mid-fall and reaches a height of 2-4 feet. some Benefits are that itsTraditionally, the mashed roots, stems, leaves, and blossoms of the Cardinal Flower were used in a decoction for treating cramps. It was also employed as an emetic for stomach issues caused by contaminated food and added to other medicines to enhance their potency. Overall, the Syosset AYLUS organization members achieved significant success in planting native species at the greenhouse. This activity contributed to the ongoing efforts of the Long Island Initiative of Native Plants in fostering local biodiversity and supporting ecological balance on Long Island.
