Greater Princeton AYLUS Featured Talented Members XII: Kathie Wang on December 28, 2018

Reported by Cassie Tammy Wang

Greater Princeton AYLUS (GPA), NJ Branch, has many talented members. Since December 11th, 2018, we started to feature some of them on our web page, so all GPA members get to know each other. Hopefully, it would also help with more constructive and collaborative teamwork among GPA members in our volunteer activities! So here comes one of our proud members Kathie Wang:

Self-Introduction Provided by Kathie Wang:

My name is Kathie Wang, a 6th grader at the West Windsor Thomas Grover Middle School. Please allow me to introduce myself a bit here:

I play table tennis (ping pong) a lot. Ping-Pong is one of my favorite sports because it is the best combination of both exercise and fun for me, and I have to use my mind quickly. When I play a game, I don’t know where my opponent is hitting the ball next, so I have to watch their patterns or which way their paddles are facing. Also, my opponents are always different, so it doesn’t get too boring. Winning a game is always exciting, but I don’t have to win all the time, because that won’t benefit my technique much. When I lose a game, I learn from my mistakes and fix them, so next time I can do it better, which is more fulfilling. Although some days can be frustrating, the outcome is always worth it, as it is all about sportsmanship.

Art is fun for me too, because it is very relaxing. I can create a piece of artwork and make it look like the way I am going for. Painting is probably my favorite style of art because the acrylic paint is so smooth and rich in color. When I use it to paint on canvas, it looks very beautiful and the way paint blends in with each other is magnificent. I really enjoy watching that.

I am always open to learning new things. I find that the nature’s organisms are very fascinating. Once I went hiking with my friends and noticed that there was a strange metallic green liquid flowing on top of a small stream. At first, I thought that pollution might cause this, so out of curiosity, we take some of the pond water into a spring water bottle and observe it under a microscope. Guess what? We found out that it was just a type of tiny algae in metallic green color!  Finding wonders in nature leads me to think about many things.

When I decided to join the GPA, my intention was to simply for me to participate in a group of students that serve our community together, so I am not doing it alone, more importantly, I won’t give it up as long as my friends are with me.
