On March 13, 2024, from 2 to 4 PM, the members of the AYLUS Raritan Branch volunteered at the Chelsea Senior Living Center in East Brunswick, where many elders live and are cared for. Three distinct groups volunteered in the Chelsea and participated in activities with the elders. The first group was on the third floor. They helped the elders craft bracelets by inserting the beads that the elders preferred into the elastic string. After an hour of crafting, the volunteers and many of the elders moved to a different room to participate in various fun games, which included ring toss (where people throw rings in hooks to earn points) and darts (where people throw darts on a dartboard to earn points). The volunteering group helped to keep track of the score and write names.
Additionally, the second group first went to the second floor to assist seniors in arts and crafts. Together, the seniors made lovely snowcones with little faces on them that they got to keep. Afterward, the volunteers headed downstairs to play a game of bingo with the seniors, where volunteers called out the numbers and gave out prizes to the winning contestants.
Last but not least, the third group socialized with the elders and had many conversations with them.
Overall, all the volunteering groups in Chelsea had a lot of fun with the elders via participating in various fun activities such as the ones included above. This was an amazing experience with the seniors because not only did they have fun, we had fun as well. Each group did an amazing job with volunteering by being helpful and respectful, and we hope we can volunteer again with the seniors at Chelsea.
