On February 8th, 2024, AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch members have made efforts to obtain assistance from Townsend Harris High School Library in order to collect books for our book drive. Our members are working very hard to reach our goal, which is to give Africa a library.
Some other members reached out to their own schools to ask for support on reaching this goal. Our branch president contacted her school’s library. The school librarian, after hearing out our goal, agreed to help us, telling us that we can go and collect the books once a month. Hearing this, our members got excited as they are now one more step closer to our goal and that school libraries are willing to support our goal as well.
As Townsend Harris has a policy where outside visitors cannot enter the school building without gaining a visitor pass or be specially invited by the staffs in the school. So, members of our branch that are also Townsend Harris students, went inside to grab the boxes of books that the librarian put in the main lobby. They brought the boxes outside, where all of our members will sort it out into bags so the boxes can be returned to be reused for next time where we collect these books. Afterwards, they brought it to our parent advisor’s car so the books can be transported from the school to another dry and clean space to keep the books before we ship them.
We would like to thank everyone who is helping us reach this goal. Every little book is another step towards providing one more library for children in Africa.
