Aylus Great Neck Branch Volunteer in the Energy and Nature center at Jones Beach on 10/3/2026(86th)

On 10/3/2026, Aylus volunteers removed mugwort in the Energy and Nature center at Jones Beach from 9:30am to 12:00am (2.5 hours).

The volunteer’s effort in the previous sessions had paid back. The patch now is much better than before. A great percentage of mugworts were removed, and the asters and goldenrods that replace them are now blooming. However, there are still some mugwort in the patch, and our job today is to focus on their seeds at the top of the plant. The volunteers use sickles and cutters to remove the seed part to prevent the reproduction of mugwort. When they were doing the task, they needed to be careful because we don’t want to shake the seeds off. Eventually, the mugwort was collected into huge plastic bags and removed.

The solarizing plan in the experiment area seemed to work. Under the black covering, almost nothing was underneath, which was great. The volunteer coordinator said that we might be leaving the cover there until next year’s summer.

Members who participated include:
