AYLUS Oakland Gardens: Supporting the Diabetes Bill and Asian American Health Equity (08/18/2026)

On August 18, 2026, from 10:15 AM to 11:45 AM, members of AYLUS Oakland Gardens gathered in front of the Flushing Library for our 248th volunteer event. We participated in a press conference led by New York State Senator John Liu to urge Governor Kathy Hochul to sign the Diabetes Bill.

The Diabetes Bill aims to address the challenges Asian Americans face in diabetes screening and diagnosis by encouraging health insurance companies to lower the BMI threshold used to identify individuals at risk for diabetes to 23. Because Asian Americans may face a higher risk of developing diabetes at a lower BMI compared with other populations, the current standards may result in some individuals not being properly screened or diagnosed.

During the press conference, several speakers shared their personal experiences and stories related to diabetes. Their stories helped our members better understand the impact that diabetes can have on individuals, families, and communities. Members listened attentively and learned more about the importance of early detection, appropriate health standards, and ensuring that everyone has access to proper medical care.

Participating in this community event gave our members an opportunity to learn about an important public health issue while supporting efforts to improve diabetes awareness and healthcare for Asian American communities. It also reminded us that community service is not limited to traditional volunteer activities. Being present, listening, learning, and supporting important causes can also make a meaningful difference.

We are grateful to Senator John Liu and all the speakers and community members who shared their experiences and advocated for better diabetes screening and healthcare. AYLUS Oakland Gardens is proud that our members had the opportunity to participate in this important event and contribute to raising awareness about an issue that affects many families in our community.
