On Thursday, August 6th, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, members of the Aylus Roslyn Branch volunteered at NOSH Delivers. NOSH is a food pantry helping people who were affected by the pandemic by helping them with extra groceries and food.
Our first task was to find and sort all the food needed for NOSH bags. We had to get 200 of each item so the nosh bags would be easy to pack. We needed black beans, rice, canned vegetables, pasta, and letters. Nosh bags are These bags are meant to help struggling families that are unable to afford or get groceries. These bags contain assorted items that are free of charge.
Our second task was to cut up and sort cardboard boxes for storage. These boxes are left over from opening new shipments of food. As more empty boxes pile up, they interfere with the limited storage space. By unfolding the boxes, there will be a significant amount of storage that is created for more food or boxes.
Our third task was helping sort the area. After we helped disassemble cardboard boxes, we helped the workers move pallets of food around to clear up more area. Along the way, we had to tear up and replace some tiles. We moved 3 pallets of corn, onions, and rice.
Finally, we packaged corn to prevent it from rotting. Because we now had a massive pallet full of corn, we had to prevent them from rotting or going bad. To do this, we packaged them into milk crates to improve the airflow and to minimize dampness. Doing this took a while because of the sheer quantity of corn but with enough effort and determination, we were able to get it done.
Working with NOSH Deliveries we had a great experience to see how we can help the community with our actions. We would definitely come back to volunteer again from this experience.
