On Thursday, July 23rd, 2026, AYLUS Oakland Gardens Members visited the Lewis Latimer House Museum to help take care and beautify it from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, as their 239th event. Lewis Latimer was an inventor, best known for partnering with Alexander Graham Bell to invent the telephone and carbon filament lightbulb.
Our members first gathered around our long time partner, Maureen Reagan to learn what we were going to do and gather tools. Two members were sent to pick up trash around the block using garbage bags and trash pickers. Two other members were sent to rake the plants, removing the dead material suffocating them. The rest of the members were sent to weed the plants.
There were many weeds to be pulled all around the museum. Our members had to use trowels to pull out the larger weeds and used their gloved hands to pull out the smaller ones. Some members were pulled from this group to use the shears and scissors to trim the plants, enhancing their look.
Once our four members that raked and picked up garbage finished their tasks, they were pulled away to weed the plants. Because there was a large amount of vegetation around the museum, this took a while. However, once they were done, a few members watered the plants using the hose attached to the museum and watering cans. They made sure to give the plants plenty of water, as this summer was especially hot.
We would like to thank Maureen Reagan and Minnie Schaefer from the New York Presbyterian Hospital for helping us throughout this event. They provided a lot of support for our members.
