On Sunday, July 17th, 2026, from 8:30 am to 1:00pm, volunteers from AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch participated in a general clean up at Flushing Friends Quaker Meeting House with Maureen Regan for their 237th event. The purpose of the event is to clean out weeds and fallen branches to preserve the Flushing Friends Quaker Meeting House.
As volunteers arrived at the event location some were called by Maureen to help with sorting out gloves for the volunteers who didn’t bring gloves for today’s event. As more volunteers arrived at the location the event officially began as Maureen told everyone to go in the other room for briefing and grouping of today’s event. Groups were organized into the weeding, collecting fallen branches and garbage collection and few were tasked with drawing a mural on the wall surrounding the building. As the branches are all collected and put in a pile for later collecting they were tasked by Maureen with other tasks like weeding or trimming down trees. After break time some volunteers were tasked by Maureen to weed and trim the tree beds on the sidewalk. At the end of the event we finish cleaning up the garbage and garbage cans at the front entrance of the meeting house.
In today’s event we collected a total of 40 bags of weeds, branches and garbage. Collecting these weed, branches and garbage isn’t about cleaning up for the good of it but about protecting and preserving history since the Flushing Friends Quaker Meeting House was originally created for religious freedom of the Quakers who were persecuted until 1663. We cleaned up the meeting house so people can meet and reflect about themselves in a clean and organized place and they can know the history of this building. Our members painted the mural with colorful flowers, bees and more to make the area more colorful and welcoming for people who come to visit here.
We want to thank Council Member Sandra Ung for visiting us during the event at Flushing Friends Quaker Meeting House for a quick visit to see our volunteers serving the community and to show her support. We also want to thank Maureen Regan for partnering with us for today’s event and preparing water, gloves, mask and paying for the pastries and bubble tea for today’s event and coordinating the event. We also want to thank the bubble tea shop, Sweet Cake, at 137-06 Northern Boulevard, Flushing NY 11354, for providing free bubble tea to our volunteers which we really appreciate. Lastly, we want to thank all our members for attending today’s event despite today’s bad air quality.
