On Sunday, June 14th, starting from 7:00 a.m. and ending at 1:00 p.m., members of the Great Neck AYLUS Branch volunteered at the Sunrise Walk event to participate in their annual walkathon to show their support for children with cancer.
The event took place at the sunrise campground, a summer camp for children with cancer. The result of this event was a wonderful and successful fundraising campaign, with many donations from community members, individuals, and corporations!
Everyone was very excited to help support this cause – many signed up to volunteer in this event, enough so that all the positions were filled. Those who were able to get a slot got assigned to different stations. Some were assigned to set up and maintain the carnival, which was a big hit for the kids. Featuring mini carnival games and inflatable slides, this section of the event was nice and smooth, all thanks to our great volunteers.
Others were assigned positions to support the walkers, whether it’d be handing out water near the start of the course, or cheering and handing the prizes at the finish line. There was a time during the event where the pump unexpectedly stopped, causing the finish line arch to deflate. Volunteers came together to hold the finish line up so that participants can cross. This was extremely memorable as this is the true spirit of working together. Both sections received great care and lots of smiles from the volunteers, further increasing the positive energy of the event. They were even aided by the cleanup crew, most of whom showed up early!
This Sunrise Day Camp event was a great showing of how much we can support each other. Us being there and volunteering allowed us to be able to support people and actually see the effects they have on the people – when we smiled, many smiled back at us; the positive energy was very clear. We are very grateful for being able to be part of this event, to be able to truly play a part in the movement to bring hope and happiness.
