On Saturday, May 9th, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the Newtown AYLUS Branch helped sort boxes and toys for United Way.
Our main job was to organize the boxes and toys on the shelves, ensuring everything on each shelf was neatly arranged and sorted by category. When we first started sorting, we split into two groups. One group was working on a box with medical items while the other group was working on boxes with food, toys, and clothing items. Eventually, more people started working on the medical boxes because there were more medical boxes than clothing boxes. The people working on the clothing items first unboxed the clothing items before hanging them on a rack for other people to sort. Once the clothes were put on the rack, the other people would take the clothes and put them where they were meant to go. This led to a very efficient process for the people working on the clothing boxes. The people working on the medical boxes had certain people open the boxes and sort the items, while the rest of the people put the items on the correct shelves. This was also a very efficient process that led us to finish multiple boxes in a short amount of time. This ended up taking the whole two hours, and we got more boxes than we thought we would.
