On March 2, 2025, members of AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch volunteered at Kissena Park for their 136th event. Members first gathered in the park’s office, where they checked in and learned about the itinerary for the day. Roxana, the park’s supervisor, separated the members into four groups so that they could complete the event more efficiently. The task for the day was to rake the leaves in Kissena Park Playground, which was a large area consisting of many playground sets and a basketball court. Group one raked along the fence on the left side of the playground, group four raked the basketball court, and groups two and three raked the outer perimeter. To evenly distribute the materials, each group brought two rakes, a broom, two sets of leaf scoops, and a stack of large, compostable paper bags. When filling the bags with leaves, it was very important for the members to make sure there weren’t any sticks inside. Many full bags ripped because of branches, which meant that the groups had to re-rake the fallen leaves. At the end of the event, members filled a total of 199 bags! Their determination led them to clean the park very quickly and effectively; thank you to all members for working so hard today!
After all the leaves were raked and bagged, members went back to the office and reconvened for an award ceremony. The NYC Parks has generously rewarded thirty-six diligent members who actively participated last year with Certificates of Merit. This ceremony also encouraged others to continue volunteering at the park’s events this year and continue improving the community’s environment.
At the end of the event, Roxana even brought in pastries and beverages for the members to celebrate all of their hard work. Thank you so much Roxana for your continued support!
