On Saturday, July 27, 2024, Joshua Meng, Brendon Jiang, and Roger Cui hosted the Pearland Branch volunteer chess lesson. We taught a variety of students ranging from beginners to advanced players through puzzles and practicing against other students. The students were introduced to many tactical aspects of the game such as the fork, pin, skewer, and mating sequences, which are vital to being able to win games. This engaging lecture allowed the students to try to implement these patterns while they play against other students. The students also had the opportunity to attempt new openings that they have learned while they play their games. After they finished their games, Joshua would analyze the game with the students watching. Through this they would learn their strong points and parts where they need to improve. While the students are having fun, they still strive to be better.
