AYLUS Syosset Volunteers at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary And Audubon Center (6/29/24)

On 6/29/24, members of AYLUS Syosset participated in spreading wood chips across areas of the hiking trails. Pitchforks to scoop the wood chips from a pile near the road into wheelbarrows which were then transported to the assigned area, dumped out and spread out by rakes. The point of this is weed suppression as the chips are placed anywhere the sunlight can reach. By covering up bare ground, seeds near the surface of the soil have less access to light.

Following this, volunteers watched a bird presentation as workers at the center introduced many native birds as well as showing live birds such as an american kestrel, Amelia and a red-tailed hawk, Baby.

Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center was the first Audubon songbird sanctuary in the nation. Today, it is a vibrant resource, offering a wide variety of activities, including environmental education, wildlife research and conservation advocacy. The sanctuary features 15 non-releasable raptors including hawks, owls, falcons and a vulture. Visitors can also become acquainted with the resident reptiles and amphibians from throughout the world.

Members who participated: Margaret Zhang (2 hrs), Nicole Zhang (2 hrs), Chenhao Xia (2 hrs) and Xuanming Liu (2 hrs).
