AYLUS Oakland Gardens Branch Mulch the Meditation Garden in Kissena Corridor Park (06/02/2024)

This is the 73rd event held by AYLUS Oakland Gardens on Sunday June 2nd 2024. During the event we finished our team’s beautification of the Meditation Garden in Kissena Corridor Park with the help of Roxana and other park employees. The last time we were in the Meditation garden we pulled an invasive tree species and other weeds. Today, with a demonstration from Roxana, we were introduced to our task of spreading mulch, up to a depth of 4 inches, to four different areas in the Garden. This is to ensure that the weeds that were pulled out wouldn’t grow back again.

During the event our volunteers were split into four groups of 10 to 15 people to handle each different area around the garden. A group of older members help distribute tools for all four piles of mulch. Rakes, pitchforks, brooms, and shovels were placed at each pile of mulch. We move a wheelbarrow to each pile as well to help spread the mulch. Then Roxana gave all of the groups a demonstration of where and how much mulch was required. We were shown that we need to leave a space around the trees that were planted there. This is so that the trunk of the trees wouldn’t start rotting due to the moisture that is kept in with the layer of mulch. Members with shovels and pitchforks help fill the wheelbarrows with mulch so that it can be carried further along the garden bed. Members with rakes spread the mulch around, making sure that the mulch covering the ground is 4 inches tall. Some members were helping spread the mulch by hand as they still want to help despite there being a shortage of tools.

When one group is finished with their pile of mulch and their garden bed, they helped other groups to finish their pile as well. Working together, we managed to finish all four piles of mulch in the park today. At the end of the event, our members help put the tools away, making sure there wasnt any tools left scattered around. Roxana also complimented our hard work. We would like to thank Roxana and other park employees for their guidance and help during the event and we hope to work with them again in the future. Thank you for helping us better the community.
