On Sunday, March 24, 2024, AYLUS Oakland Gardens members partnered up with Friends of Francis Lewis Park to help host a Community Egg Hunt at Francis Lewis Park. This was the 57th event held by the AYLUS Oakland Gardens branch. Our members were hiding the eggs for the kids to find and were doing free face paintings. It was very cold and windy, and we were by the bay, so it was colder. However, many volunteers came and still worked, never complaining that it was too cold to work.
Friends of Francis Lewis Park is a volunteer group dedicated to beautifying, restoring and caring for Francis Lewis Park. They filled all the eggs the day before and packed them into boxes for us. This lets us easily take the eggs and hide them. Furthermore, they hosted a free bike raffle and a “Guess How Many Jellybeans Are in the Jar!”. Another thing they did was have someone in a costume as the Easter bunny. All the kids loved to take pictures with him. We would like to thank Dorian Mecir, the leader of Friends of Francis Lewis Park, to provide us with an opportunity to participate in this amazing event.
Initially, we wanted to make balloons for the event, but one of our parent advisors, who was the main supervisor of balloon making, wasn’t available today, and we didn’t have enough supplies, so we decided to resort to face painting. Our table was really popular and was packed with people. Our members did an excellent job painting the faces. We’d like to thank Jia Qi Liu (Angela), Sophia ShiHan You, Evaline Yuel, Vicki Lin, Lea Yang, Runyi Liu, Nerissa Xu, and Zhengyilan Fang for face painting. They were face painting the whole time and didn’t collect eggs, but they didn’t complain and kept on working. The cold air was very harsh, and our face — painters claimed that they could not feel their arms after spending long periods of time with their hands out, painting. Some of the most popular designs include an Easter bunny and eggs.
Some of our taller members tied party banners to the trees and poles as decoration. After they were done, the park looked much better and less plain. Our younger members concealed eggs for the children to discover. They did an extravagant job, as most of the event area was covered with eggs after one minute.
When the event was done, our members stayed back to help clean up. The floor was littered with crushed or open eggs and both empty and unopened candy. Our members and Friends of Francis Lewis Park tried their best, as there was a lot of it. In the end, we successfully managed to pick up most of the trash.
Once again, thank you friends of Francis Lewis Park. We look forward to working with them again and bettering our community!
