On November 20th, 2023, five volunteers organized the collection and proper disposal of used batteries. Volunteers gathered used batteries from the local community which were then organized and recycled by the same volunteers. Non-rechargeable batteries were brought to be recycled at the Frisco Environmental Collection Center while rechargeable batteries were brought to a local Home Depot.

In today’s world, environmental consciousness and sustainability have become crucial elements of responsible citizenship. Volunteering to recycle used batteries contributes to the larger goal of creating a sustainable future by aligning with goals to reduce waste and mitigate the impact of hazardous materials on the environment. This is because used batteries pose a significant environmental threat due to the toxic materials they contain, including heavy metals like mercury, lead, and cadmium. When improperly disposed of, such as discarding into a trash bin, the harmful substances present in batteries are released into the soil and water. As a result, recycling used batteries play a crucial role in preventing environmental pollution and promoting the responsible disposal of hazardous waste.
