On November 19th of 2023, the Roslyn AYLUS branch helped out the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County (CP Nassau) in their event to raise funds for people with developmental disabilities from 8:00 to 10:30 AM. This organization was originally created because Anita Baldwin, a mother to an 18-month old son, discovered he had cerebral palsy in 1941. She then created the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County in 1948. Today, this organization serves almost 1,500 children & adults with motor disabilities. It is CP Nassau’s 75th anniversary.
Cerebral palsy is a motor disability people often develop in their early years of life. The main focus of this event was to encourage the athletes to keep going. The Roslyn AYLUS volunteers cheered on athletes running a 5K race for cerebral palsy. A total of 67 people participated in this event: 32 runners, 29 walkers, 4 strollers (parents pushing their children in strollers), and 2 rollers (people in wheelchairs). We cheered the athletes on from every point of the race, from beginning to end. We also offered water at water stations for the athletes to ensure they would stay hydrated.
This was an amazing and educational experience for all of us. Not only were the Roslyn members supporting these athletes, but we each supported the cause of the race. This was an important event because all the funds raised went to giving people with motor disabilities better opportunities in their lives. The ultimate goal is to raise funds to aid people with cerebral palsy. Towards the end of the event, over $50,000 was raised for this cause. All those funds go to this wonderful cause. We all look forward to the next event!
