West Essex AYLUS Supports Adaptive Skating Team for Skaters with Disabilities 6/4/23

On June 4th, 2023, West Essex AYLUS volunteered with Essex Special Skaters, which is an non-profit 501(c)(3) charity adaptive skating program for those with intellectual disabilities. Skaters meet once a week on Sunday’s to learn, grow, adapt, and exercise by skating.

In June Essex special skaters practiced their program at Codey arena to prepare for the upcoming national championship in Detroit. Members of West Essex AYLUS served as unified partner for special skaters in the program.  Other West Essex AYLUS members helped assemble background prop and space ship prop used in the program.  Members arrived early to set up the props. During practice, members helped bring props on to ice and take off from ice as skaters are not allowed to step out of the rink.  At the competition, team score will be deducted if skaters stepped out of the rink.  The team follows the same rule during practice.  West Essex members then take the props apart and store them in a closet in the arena.

West Essex members (2 hours each):  Ethan Yang, Forest Yang, Sophia Zheng, Qing Liu, and Min Zhang, Olivia Rowell, Tyler VanWagner
