Greater Princeton AYLUS Supporting Students with Autism to Learn Social Skills (8th) in May 2023

In May, to support students with autism learn social skills through chess, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) Sports Committee, in collaboration with Limitless Behavioral Services (LBSAC, 3635 Quaker Bridge Rd. Suite 14, Hamilton, NJ 08619), continued a volunteer program using their strength and passion to teach chess every Wednesday from 3 to 6 pm to autistic kids.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. People with ASD often have problems with social communication and interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests.

Limitless Behavioral Services and Consulting provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services for children with autism and similar behavioral or developmental disabilities. Services are provided in the center, home, school, and community to best meet the needs of your child.

ABA is an empirically based intervention for children and adults with autism as well as other behavioral issues. Research shows that through the use of ABA, desirable behaviors can be increased and undesirable behaviors can be decreased and replaced with appropriate behaviors.

Simply stated, ABA can be used to change almost any behavior. ABA providers are charged with changing socially important behaviors by increasing desirable behaviors and decreasing undesirable behaviors. LBSAC believes in a team approach that involves the BCBA, ABA therapists, and family members being actively involved in the creation and implementation of the child’s programming.

Social skills groups will focus on play and communication skills. Structured activities will be led by BCBAs and ABA Therapists. Individual student needs will be determined and addressed during each group. Ages 1-9 will be held at the Lawrenceville location. Ages 10 and up will be held at the Hamilton location.

Volunteers: Erick Yan (5/17, 1 hr; 5/31, 1 hr), Eddy Tian (5/17, 3 hrs; 5/31, 3 hrs), Joyce Guo (5/17, 3 hrs; 5/31, 3 hrs), and Rebecca Zegas. Additional volunteers are welcome to join with some training on communication!
