AYLUS Bellaire helped to end homelessness at Beacon on November 21, 2022

The Beacon is a non-profit organization with the mission to restore hope and help end homelessness by providing essential services to the homeless population in the Houston area. These services include hot meals, private showers, full-service laundry, civil legal aid, counseling, and next-step services.

On November 21, 2022, eight volunteers and a parent chaperone from the ALYUS Bellaire Branch volunteered at The Beacon Day Center. The volunteers began on laundry duty, taking clothes out of drying machines and folding them to be returned to their owners. After about 25 minutes on laundry duty, the volunteers were moved to lunch service. During lunch service, volunteers greeted the individual experiencing homelessness as they operated the lunch line. Volunteers served the lunch meals as the individuals moved through the cafeteria style serving line. Lunch plates were any combination of choices including ham and roast beef, turkey, stuffing, green beans, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, peach cobbler, bread rolls, fruit, and salad. After assembling and distributing many meals, the volunteers helped clean the kitchen and the cafeteria eating area by wiping all surfaces with disinfecting solution and sweeping floors for debris.

We are thankful to have had this opportunity to serve at The Beacon Day Center and be a part of the mission to serve those in most need in the city of Houston.

The following volunteers attended this event (3 hours): Yeong-En Andy Shen, Ethan Liu, Samuel Deng, Joy Xia, Angelina Hoang, Sophia Li, Serena Li, and Victoria Wang.
