In preparation for next week’s special Earth Day events, the members (Shannon, Willow and Roger) of the San Francisco South Bay Branch went to two different events this weekend. On Friday, members went to the Veggielution farm to help replant strawberries, weed, and sort through compost bins. In the strawberry fields, there were many weeds and misplaced strawberries that needed to be uprooted and replanted. While using special tools and techniques, members were able to successfully rehabilitate around fifty strawberry plants throughout the field. Other members worked on sorting through compost bins. They would scoop compost into a sifter, then spent time hunting for Red Wiggler worms and placing them in a separate compost bin. That way, already fully composted items could be used as fertilizer (which was sent to the strawberry fields), and the half composted items could be placed back into the correct bin and be composted later on. The day after, members went to One City Forest’s natural reserve to help plant understory shrubs and water young saplings. Members learned how to depot shrubs, comb through roots, and properly plant the shrubs into individually dug holes. Afterwards, the watering team worked together to both remove unwanted weeds and water sapling trees. By fixing fields, watering saplings, and weeding all sorts of plots of land, we helped partially restore the environment and develop a new understanding for the compost and restoration side of gardening.
